Matt Powell

Matt Powell

Matt found his way into a High School Theatre Sports final when his school team’s reserve broke his arm, and bravely essayed a Welsh accent in a scene about coal miners. He spent several years learning, and later teaching, improvisation at university, representing the University of Canterbury at both local and national levels, before joining the Court Jesters in late 2002. As well as Scared Scriptless, Matt has appeared in several Jesters shows, including Scriptless Uncut, A Very Merry Scriptless, and Chatterbox, and has variously acted, written, and directed for DramaSoc, Musoc, Canterbury Children’s Theatre, and Christchurch Repertory Theatre. In 2007, Matt adapted Shakespeare’s Tempest as the Court Theatre’s school touring show, The Magic Island. A strong narrative player with skills in wordplay, music and physicality, Matt can also be seen performing with the acclaimed Latin Fire dance troupe, and is a member of the Solid Energy Chorus of Southern Opera.
